Occasion in the Snowstorm is a practice within Yiqing Chen’s series Gaming as Method of Sound Production. It's a sonic simulator game that trap the player in endless snowstorm, only blinding whiteness before the eyes, while the ears are filled with ceaseless whistling of wind. Actually these sounds change randomly in response to the player’s embodied movements—position, orientation, and motion within terrain trigger different sound tracks. The game is transformed into a mechanism of aleatoric sound production, as the controller in the hand is deconstructed into mixer. The project explores how to use gaming as a participatory method and democratic structure of sound production, challenging the authority and teleology of sound.

"Gaming as Method of Sound Production" is winner of Gdańsk Artathon by Łaźnia Centre for Contemporary Art (Gdańsk, Poland), as part of Augmented Europe funded by the European Commission’s Executive Agency for Education, Audiovisual and Culture (EACEA).
